The Oak Ridge Horn Honk event is usually held each year the last weekend in September. The official dates for 2010 will be Friday September 24th and Saturday September 25th.
Admission is $40.00 per person as a donation to the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum and is applicable for those wishing to have horns mounted on the locomotives for runbys, or for those wishing to do vehicle runbys. There is no charge to simply come and watch.
Friday morning we will allow an hour or two for visiting and "tuning up" those horns before we start the runbys. Early birds can come out Thursday afternoon or evening as well for some additional time. This will give everyone time to get the kinks out of their horns and hopefully eliminate some of the rush trying to fit everyone in on the Friday and Saturday runbys. As in the past, we will do everything possible to try and get three locomotive runbys for each person wishing to participate.
PLEASE NOTE - as this event grows it is imperative we keep things moving in order to get everyone worked in.
If you only have one horn, then you may mount your horn on the locomotive 3 times if you wish. However, let us know if you have repeat horns so that we can let those doing recordings know about it. At the end of the daily runbys, we will load up the train and provide a ride to Blair and return. One person will get to mount a horn on the lead locomotive on each trip. We will announce later in the evening the bidding results for this. As always, you may ride the train whether or not your horn gets mounted. For those wishing to monitor radio communications during the event we are using 160.425 Mhz.
The horn blow site is held at Burchfield Rd and TN Hwy 58, near Oak Ridge TN and right next to the historic old K-25 World War II nuclear site, the home of the atomic bomb. Since we will be on government property, no alcoholic beverages or firearms are allowed. Also, since Friday is a work day for offices located at K-25, vehicle runbys MUST be held strictly to Connector Road,(run parrallel to the railroad track) also no horn blowing in the parking lot by the buildings. On Saturdays, this area is popular with bicyclists and we must be respectful of them since this is a public road of sorts. Please watch for them so we don't cause them to have to go purchase a hearing aid.
If I think of anything else, I will make additions later.
All proceeds go to Southern Appalachia Railway museum to pay for diesel fuel and locomotive maintenence.
Thanks and hope to see you in September at Oak Ridge.
